What is Born Punk?

Born Punk is a cyberpunk point and click adventure game in the style of 90s classics like Monkey Island and Beneath a Steel Sky. The player takes control of three characters at different times and has to solve environmental puzzles and use items found in the game world to interact with their surroundings. The three playable characters are; a former corporate combat-hacker down on her luck, the CEO of a multi-national mega-corporation, and an android who is obsessed with 80s rap and nerd culture. Born Punk focuses on narrative, story and character development as the game progresses through its main mystery and hook: the characters are infected with a rogue AI with nebulous and, at least on first sight, incomprehensible goals. Downtrodden slums, glittering corporate enclaves, seedy bars, Bornholm’s space elevator and last but not least space itself are the backdrop of the dystopian, but nonetheless humorous, thriller that is Born Punk.

Whilst cyberpunk is quickly becoming a popular genre again, most interpretations of it are traditionally dark and depressive. We believe we can tell a ‘cyberpunky’ story without draining the player emotionally, and we also believe cyberpunk can be interpreted in a more light-hearted way than is usually the case. Our characters explore their dystopian surroundings in a futuristic version of the quaint (in 2019) island of Bornholm, which has only very rarely been used as the setting of a game. Over the course of the story, we not only delve into Bornholm’s history as well as into an almost absurd what-if scenario for the island in which it is the host of a space elevator, but in two out of three cases our characters represent a lens through which cyberpunk was rarely explored before: the perspective of a corporate CEO with the power of billions of dollars behind her, and that of a slightly dysfunctional android trying to live his life in a world prejudiced against the emerging societal class of artificial lifeforms. And who thinks he's a gangsta rapper. That helps too.

Born Punk mostly relies on established conventions within the point and click genre, but we are also adding our own game design magic in two ways: choices and consequences on one hand, and our lore system on the other. Choices and consequences became a staple of many genres over the course of the decades, but have mostly been ignored by popular point and clicks. In Born Punk, many actions by the player will have ramifications for the player and the story alike. Sometimes, choices will merely change the disposition of the game’s characters and as a result some dialogue lines, sometimes, choices will influence the outcome of the whole game. The player will be kept in the dark about all that though, to be able to explore the world of Born Punk with a different mindset.<br /> Our lore system plays into this: many objects in the world that are clickable by the player will have a lore item associated with them. By (voluntarily) reading these lore entries, the player will not only be able to delve deeper into the world that we are creating, but they will also gain insight that may help them in dialogues and puzzles. NOT reading lore entries will never lead to the player getting stuck, but showing interest in the world’s background will lead to knowledge that can be used to the player’s advantage.
